Books that have been Ruined by Movies

OK, so it's all happened to us: our favorite book has been done by the studios, and they completely TRASHED it! I don't mean just changing or shortening the plot. I mean removing the magic or significance of the writing, and altering the very essence of the book. For example, I thought Prisoner of Azkaban was very poorly made compared to the other two HP movies, whereas the LOTR series did a very good job of capturing the essence of the books. So what books have been completely destroyed by movies? Have there been any movies to which the books didn't live up (like Star Wars, for example.)? Hit me with them titles.

Okay, the Left Behind movies were terrible! And the books were pretty good!

I agree about Harry potter.... I liked the first one, coz I saw it before I read the book, but hated the second and third, especially the third as the third book is my favourite.

No matter how well they do the movies, the books will always be better. Yes Lord of the rings was good, but after reading the books, you have to agree that the movies aren't as detailed.

Series of Unfortunate Events, the movie removed all the magic and puns from the books, it was awful in that respect, not a terrible movie, I wouldn't mind seeing it on video e.g. but it's not theater worthy. That's the first one that comes to mind.

JAWS! And how many innocent sharks have been ruined by both.

hmmm...Queen of the Damned such a ludicrous insult to Anne Rice.

What about the _Wizard of Earthsea_ made for TV movies recently shown on the scifi channel? Badness!

Bridge to Terabithia! Don't ever watch the movie. It's horrible! At least the one I saw.

Hearts in Atlantis the movie was crap compared to the book. However I don't think any movies ruin the book in particular, they just portray the plot badly. Oh yeah, Harry Potter 1 was horrible, as was 3 though not to such a degree; 2 was the best movie and my favorite book of the series.

Mystic River's film version sucked. Don't even bother watching it. The book was the best.

Bridge to Terabithia? My advice would be don't ever read the book, either! What was bad in the movie that wasn't already bad in the book? :-)

The first thought I have concerning this topic is a walk to remember. I loved the book, but thought the movie was rather bla. I always try to read the book before I watch any movie of it...call it a tradition of mine...lol. I do agree that often the books are better. I think it is because one is able to make his/her own character pictures...just my thoughts!

Okay, the bone collector great book, amazing book, but the movie sucked. only two people in the movie kept there original names from the book, lincon rhyme, and amelia sachs.
I do like denziel washington but that movie was just terrible.
Also didnt like the first hp movie, the book was just way better.
The one movie that did stay true to the book was Brave heart. Way to go mel gibson!

I thoguht Harry Potter 3 the movie went way too fast and skipped a ton of stuff I would have liked to have seen. They totally took out hte Quidditch WOrld Cup! i mean dont' get me wrong I hate the quidditch scenes but that was a cool part of the book, and they could have cut it down! It just went waaaay too fast! i thoguht the first and second movies were fairly well done.

I recently watched "Big Fish" on HBO and it was not as bad as I had feared. The books are always better because no book can compare to a 2 hour movie. There will always be something that had to be changed or left out while making the movie.

The movie the scarlet Pimpernel that was made in 1982 is better than the books. In the books Margaret has the intelligence of a mosquito. But in the movie she is a little brighter. As for Sir pursy. He is wonderful. How can he not be. But in the 1982 movie he is a little more human. They seek him here they seek him there.......

I think most ppl will tend to disagree with me, but I feel The Shining was a horrible movie and the book is still one of my faves. They totally botched it up.

I liked the new version of the shining the one with jack nicholson that one was pretty scary to me. Another bad movie was silence of the lams although it was very similar to the book, even though i like anthony hopkins, another one was the horse whisperer great book bad movie.
